  2. nonmetallic, gaseous element, with a symbol 
  3. Ar, an atomic number of 18, and a relative 
  4. atomic mass number of 39.948. It is grouped 
  5. with the inert gases, since it was long 
  6. believed not to react with other substances, 
  7. but observations now indicate that it can be 
  8. made to combine with boron fluoride to form 
  9. compounds.
